Gemini is identified with Castor and Pollux, the twin sons of Leda. Castor was mortal, Pollux divine; when Castor was killed, Pollux asked Zeus to share his immortality with his brother. Zeus placed them among the stars, where they alternated between Olympus and the underworld.
