Cancer

protection, memory, belonging

Overview

**I feel.** Protection: memory, nurturing, the inner home where one retreats and keeps things safe.

Mythology

The crab Karkinos appears briefly in Greek myth, sent by Hera to distract Heracles during his battle with the Lernaean Hydra. Though it was quickly crushed, Hera rewarded its loyalty by placing it in the sky. The crab's significance lies not in heroic deeds but in steadfast devotion and the willingness to protect -- themes that recur across cultures in lunar deities associated with this sign, from Selene to Isis.

Interpretation

Cancer is a water sign ruled by the Moon, governing the emotional interior: family bonds, early memories, and the instinct to nurture and protect. Planets in Cancer operate with sensitivity and depth, strongly influenced by mood and the quality of emotional safety in the environment. The sign's great gift is empathy and the capacity to create belonging; its shadow is defensiveness, clinging to the past, and difficulty separating self from other.
